Have You Ever Been Asked to Prove Yourself?

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Matthew 4:5-6

Immediately following Jesus’ baptism, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him, and there was a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” So it was Satan’s immediate temptation Jesus identify Himself. (Matthew 3:16-17)

Have you ever been asked to prove yourself by performing a specific act? Well, I believe just as Satan wanted Jesus to prove who He was, he tempts believers to prove their worthiness as well. At least for me, accepting who I am in Christ has been an ongoing battle. If I am productive in the things of the Lord, I feel confident I am a child of God, but if I am idle, or suffer rejection, I can become anxious and begin to doubt. But thank God, I have His Holy Spirit and His Word. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

You Are the Messiah

When Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter immediately answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 16:16-17)

So, who do we say we are? Do we look for proof of our salvation by our actions or affirmations from friends? No, but rather, God’s spirit bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of the living God; and confirms it and affirms it with His Word.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13
