Watch Your Mouth

“I should have just kept my mouth shut!” Famous words and thoughts by yours truly.

When I feel attacked, I immediately want to explain and defend myself. In the heat of the moment, my quick response can be emotionally damaging to myself and others.

To make matters worse, I have this habit of shutting down a confrontation with "the last word”.

My dad was notorious for telling me “Girl, you always gotta get the last word.” I usually followed up his remark by gifting him with the “last word” … while running out of the room like a coward.

I am an expert at making a fool of myself in the moment and dwelling on the shame, guilt, and shoulda coulda woulda’s in the aftermath.

“Be Quick to Listen …”

The book of James tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Each day I must intentionally practice obedience and patience. I am far from perfect but thank God that His mercy is new every morning because this girl needs it!

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19

As believers we are called to stand apart for God. Easier said than done, right? I mean, being a believer does not exclude me from being human, feeling human, and reacting like a human.

In a world where everyone wants to react and be heard; what if we simply pause?Step away from the situation and pray. Ask God to help you respond at the right time and with grace. Sometimes getting in the last word just isn’t worth it, trust me!

“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” James 3:5
